Kundanna qawwija

Bħala membri tal-Partit Laburista fil-Parlament Ewropew nesprimu l-kundanna qawwija u bla riżerva tagħna għall-qtil brutali ta’ Daphne Caruana Galizia.

Hu qtil li jattakka il-libertá tal-kelma, prinċipju li bħala poplu tant ħdimna għalih, u l-ħelsien li għandu jkollhom il-ġurnalisti biex iwettqu l-ħidma tagħhom bla xkiel u biża’, prinċipju ieħor li hu garantit mill-liġijiet ta’ Malta.

Nistennew li l-proċeduri ta’ investigazzjoni jitmexxew bl-akbar qawwa u bir-riżorsi kollha possibbli biex il-kriminali nvoluti jinqabdu malajr kemm jista’ jkun u biex issir ġustizzja.

Għalhekk nilqgħu l-impenn tal-awtoritajiet Maltin li saħansitra sejħu għall-għajnuna ta’ forzi tal-ordni esperti minn pajjiżi oħra, biex jgħinu fl-investigazzjoni.

Fi żmien bħal dan nemmnu li l-poplu kollu għandu jibqa’ magħqud f’kundanna lejn dan l-aġir kriminali u f’rispett sħiħ lejn il-valuri tad-demokrazija u tar-“rule of law”.

Nagħtu l-kondoljanzi profondi tagħna lill-membri kollha tal-familja tagħha.

Intervent bil-miktub mill-MEPs Alfred Sant, Miriam Dalli u Marlene Mizzi waqt id-dibattitu “Council and Commission statements – Protection of journalists and the defence of media freedom in Malta: the case of Daphne Caruana Galizia” illum fil-Plenarja tal-Parlament Ewropew fi Strasburgu.

Il-qtil ta’ Daphne Caruana Galizia huwa delitt orribbli, li qatt ma jista’ jkun ġustifikat.

Mhuwiex attakk biss kontra persuna individwali , imma kontra Malta, l-Ewropa u l-valuri tal-Maltin kollha.

M’għandniex inħallu dan l-att faħxi jimmina d-demokrazija f’pajjiżna.

Lanqas għandna nħallu l-konsegwenzi tiegħu jaqsmu lil pajjizna u lill-poplu Malti.

Magħquda flimkien, irridu niżguraw li ssir ġustizzja.

M’huwiex aċċettabbli li Malta tispiċċa ostaġġ ta’ min irid juża attakk terroristiku biex jagħmel il-ħsara lil pajjiżna u lill-poplu tagħna.

Niddeploraw il-fatt li hemm min ħa din l-opportunità biex jitfa’ dubju fuq l-impenn tal-awtoritajiet Maltin lejn il-valuri demokratiċi tar-rule of law u l-libertà tal-espressjoni.

Dawn il-valuri jsawru d-demokraziji moderni, effettivi u b’saħħithom.

Bħala pajjiż demokratiku Malta dejjem iddefendiethom.

Hekk se jibqa’ jsir.

Il-gvern Malti għamel tajjeb li, waqt li immobilizza ir-riżorsi kollha disponibbli ħalli l-każ jiġi investigat bl-akbar reqqa, talab l-għajnuna tas-servizzi Ewropej tas-sigurtà biex il-ħatja ta’ dan l-assassinju xokkanti jinqabdu.

L-appoġġ li wrew il-forzi politiċi Ewropej f’dil-Kamra biex anke jgħinu fl-investigazzjonijiet li qed isiru huma tal-akbar inkoraġġiment għall-poplu Malti.

Hi ħaġa tajba li l-Unjoni Ewropea tkun magħquda mal-poplu Malti f’dan il-mument diffiċli.

Min jipprova jfixkel din l-għaqda b’diversivi partiġġjani, qed ifixkel il-kawża tad-demokrazija, tal-ġustizzja u tal-espressjoni ħielsa f’Malta u fl-Ewropa.

Written statement by MEPs Alfred Sant, Miriam Dalli and Marlene Mizzi during the debate “Council and Commission statements – Protection of journalists and the defence of media freedom in Malta: the case of Daphne Caruana Galizia” today at the plenary of the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

The murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia was a horrible crime, which can never be justified.

It was not only an attack on an individual person, but an attack against Malta, Europe and the values which all Maltese share.

We should not allow this hideous act to undermine democracy in our country.

Nor should we allow its consequences to sow division in the country and among the Maltese people.

Together, we have to ensure that justice is done.

It is not aceptable that Malta ends up a hostage to whoever wanted to mount a terrorist attack in order to undermine the country and our people.

We deplore the fact that there have been people to seize the opportunity to create doubt about the commitment of the Maltese authorities towards the democratic values of the rule of law and freedom of expression.

These are the values that underlie modern, effective and healthy democracies.

As a democratic state Malta has always upheld such values.

It will continue to do so.

While mobilising all its available resources to ensure that the murder investigation is carried out with the utmost rigour, the Malta government has done well to request the assistance of European security services in the search and capture of those responsible for this shocking assassination.

The willingness shown by European political forces present in this Chamber to also help with the ongoing investigations shall be of great encouragement to the Maltese people.

It is right that the European Union stands united with the Maltese people at this difficult moment.

Whoever attempts to disturb this sense of unity with partisan sideshows will be obstructing the cause of democracy, justice and freedom of expression in Malta and Europe.
