Stqarrija maħruġa mill-Uffiċċju tal-MEP Miriam Dalli

“Jekk pajjiżna ma jilħaqx il-miri tiegħu tar-riċiklaġġ u nuqqas ta’ skart se nkunu qed nitilfu oportunità ekonomika u ambjentali. Hemm bżonn ta’ aktar inizjattivi, infurzar akbar u parteċipazzjoni sħiħa taċ-ċittadini”. Qalet dan il-Membru Parlamentari Ewropew Miriam Dalli waqt żjara li għamlet fil-faċilità ta’ WEEE Malta u GreenMT fl-Imqabba.

WEEE Malta hija kumpanija responsabli minn immaniġjar ta’ skart elettriku jew elettroniku li jaħdem b’batteriji jew elettriku filwaqt li Green MT hija responsabli mill-immaniġjar ta’ skart tal-ippakiġjar.

Dalli saħqet li rridu nibdew nħarsu lejn l-iskart bħala riżors li jista’ jikkontribwixxi għall-ekonomija ta’ pajjiżna billi anke jħaddem diversi Maltin u Għawdxin fis-settur.

Miriam Dalli qalet li l-immaniġjar tal-iskart mhux settur li rridu nindirizzaw waħdu f’ vacuum imma huwa qasam li jrid jkunu indirizzat mill-aspett ekonomiku, impjiegi industrija u ambjent bħala katina waħda.

Fuq kollox, tenniet Dalli d-dmir ta’ kull wieħed u waħda minnha hu li jiddisponi u jirriċikla mill-iskart, inkluż dak elettriku u elettroniku b’mod legali u responsabli.

Dalli spjegat li l-ekonomija ċirkulari tista’ twassal għal tkabbir f’niċċeċ ġodda iżda biex dan isir hemm bżonn investiment dirett fir-riċerka u l-innovazzjoni.

Dalli rrikonoxxiet l-importanza ta’ djalogu mal-istakeholders fis-settur sabiex il-leġiżlazjoni li tgħaddi minn Brussel tkun fl-aħħar mill-aħħar tirrifletti l-bżonnijiet tal-industrija, tal-pajjiż u taċ-ċittadini.

Essenzjali wkoll li l-liġijiet ikunu emendati b’mod li jindirizzaw l-issues f’pajjiżna u infurzati biex jitwaqqfu prattiċi irresponsabli u li jmorru kontra l-ispirtu tal-liġi.

Dalli appellat għal aktar edukazzjoni u kuxjenza dwar is-suġġett u ħeġġet lill-familji biex jagħmlu l-parti żgħira tagħhom u jirriċiklaw l-iskart fid-djar tagħhom.

Għal din iż-żjara kien hemm preżenti c-Chairman ta’ WEEE Malta Marcel Mizzi, c-CEO ta’ WEE Malta u Green MT Joe Attard, c-COO ta’ WEEE Malta Sergio Mallia, c-COO ta’ Green MT Marcella Agius u l-impjegati ta’ dawn il-kumpaniji.

Miriam Dalli calls for a change in the approach towards recycling

“If Malta does not reach it’s recycling and waste reduction targets, we will be missing an economic and environmental opportunity. There is the need for more initiatives, greater enforcement and full active participation from all citizens”, stated Miriam Dalli while visiting WEEE Malta and GreenMT in Mqabba.

WEEE Malta is responsible for managing electric and electronic waste whilst GreenMT is responsible for the managing of packaging waste.

Dalli emphasised that we need to look at waste as a resource that can contribute to our economy since it is also a source of employment.

Miriam Dalli said that managing of waste should not be treated in a vacuum. Rather it is a sector which should be addressed holistically by taking into consideration the economic, employment, industry and environmental aspects.

After all, said Dalli, each and every one of us has an obligation to dispose of and recycle waste, including electric and electronic waste in a legal and responsible manner.

Dalli explained how the circular economy can develop new niche markets. However, for this to happen direct investment is needed in research and innovation.

Dalli acknowledged the importance of dialogue with all stakeholders involved in this sector to ensure that EU law reflects the needs of the industry, the State and the citizens.

It is essential that laws are amended in a manner that issues in Malta are properly addressed and enforced to eliminate any irresponsible practices that go against the spirit of the law.

Dalli called for more education and awareness about this subject and encouraged families to do their small part and recycle the waste generated in their homes.

Present for this visit were WEEE Malta Chairman Mr Marcel Mizzi, WEEE Malta and GreenMT CEO Mr Joe Attard, WEE MALTA COO Mr Sergio Mallia, GreenMT COO Ms Marcella Agius and the employees of the two companies.
