Terz tal-ikel dinji jintrema: Is-Soċjalisti u Demokratiċi bi proposti konkreti

Il-Parlament Ewropew approva proposti progressivi li tressqu mis-Soċjalisti u Demokratiċi, bl-għan li tnaqqas bin-nofs il-ħela tal-ikel sal-2030. Il-proposti jinkludu t-tneħħija ta’ restrizzjonijiet eżistenti fuq donazzjonijiet tal-ikel, tifsira aktar ċara dwar il-marki ‘best before’ u ‘use by’, u suq għal frott u ħxejjex li jintremew minħabba raġunijiet estetiċi.

Il-proposti, li ġew approvati b’623 vot favur, 20 kontra u 33 astensjonijiet, tressqu fid-dawl li hu stmat li madwar terz tal-ikel dinji qed jintilef fil-proċess tal-produzzjoni tal-ikel.

Il-kelliema tas-Soċjalisti fuq l-Ambjent Miriam Dalli qalet li l-ammont ta’ ikel li qed jintrema u jinħela hu skandaluż.

‘Qed nitkellmu fuq kważi 170kg ta’ ikel moħli minn kull persuna fl-Ewropa fis-sena. Din mhix kwistjoni politika biss iżda wkoll morali. L-Unjoni Ewropea għandha d-dover li taġixxi. Kull wieħed u waħda minnha jrid ikun proattiv u mhux jistenna lil haddiehor jiehu azzjoni,’ qalet l-MEP Maltija.

Miriam Dalli ssuktat tgħid li m’hi xejn għajr inġustizzja l-fatt li ħwienet tal-ikel, tal-ħaxix, fabbriki, rziezet u anke fid-djar tagħna qed jintrema ikel li fil-maġġor parti hu tajjeb biex jittiekel.

’Mhux aċċettabli li għax frotta ma tkunx tal-qies jew forma perfetta tintrema. Lanqas li nagħmlu ostakli biex l-ikel jingħata bħala donazzjoni. Kull wieħed u waħda minnha tista tnaqqas din il-ħela billi nbiddlu l-attitudnijiet tagħna. Wara kollox, biex nipproduċu l-ikel qed neqirdu foresti, nipproduċu emissjonijiet, nużaw l-ilma u nilħqu l-limiti ekoloġiċi tal-pjaneta tagħna,’ temmet tgħid l-MEP Laburista.

Third of world food goes to waste: S&D with new measures to cut food waste

The European Parliament approved progressive proposals put forward by the Socialists and Democrats to cut food waste by half by 2030. AMong the measures proposed by the Socialists and Democrats is the lifting of existing restrictions on food donations, a better understanding of the “best before” and “use by” labels, and a market for fruits and vegetables that are thrown away for aesthetic reasons.

These proposals which were overwhelmingly approved with 623 votes in favour, 20 against and 33 abstentions were put forward as it is currently estimated that a third of world food is lost in the entire food production process.

Miriam Dalli as S&D’s spokesperson on the Environment, said that the amount of food waste is scandalous.

’Every person in Europe wastes around 170kg of food per year. This is not just a political issue but also a moral one. The EU has the responsibility to act. We need to be proactive and take immediate action and not wait for others to take action,’ the Maltese MEP said.

Miriam Dalli said that it’s an injustice that supermarkets, greengrocers, factories, farms and even households are constantly wasting food, when most of this food is fit for human consumption.

’It is unacceptable that if a fruit does not have a perfect size or shape it is thrown away. We should stop creating obstacles for donation of food. Each and every one of us can save rather than waste food by changing our attitudes. After all, in producing food we are chopping down forests, extracting water, emitting fossil fuel emissions, and thus reaching the ecological limits of our planet,’ Miriam Dalli concluded.
