‘Hemm bżonn ta’ appoġġ u azzjoni kkoordinata fuq livell baġitarju b’risposta għal din il-kriżi,’ qalu Membri tal-Parlament Ewropew lill-President tal-Kunsill Charles Michel

Il-Kap tad-delegazzjoni Maltija tal-S&D Miriam Dalli u l-Membru Parlamentari Ewropew Josianne Cutajar, membru tal-kumitat tal-industrija tal-PE, iffirmaw ittra mibgħuta lill-President tal-Kunsill Ewropew Charles Michel. Fl-ittra jħeġġu lill-Unjoni Ewropea biex tadotta azzjoni kkoordinata b’urġenza. Dan fid-dawl tal-impatt ekonomiku u soċjali tal-Coronavirus.

L-ittra, mibgħuta fuq l-inizjattiva tal-Grupp tas-Soċjalisti u d-Demokratiċi, kienet iffirmata mill-MEPs tal-PPE, il-Ħodor, il-GUE u r-Renew. L-Ewroparlamentari qalu li l-Ewropa tista’ diġà tinnota l-konsegwenzi ekonomiċi u ta’ saħħa tal-epidemija. Dawn il-konsegwenzi huma enfasizzati minn għexieren ta’ snin ta’ nuqqas ta’ investiment fl-infrastruttura pubblika.

“F’din il-kriżi tas-saħħa hemm ir-responsabbiltà li naġixxu. Kważi m’hemm l-ebda flessibilità għall-politika monetarja fl-Ewropa u, fi kwalunkwe każ, ma nistgħux nistennew li l-Bank Ċentrali Ewropew jaġixxi waħdu. Irridu nintervjenu bl-għodda tagħna stess biex nillimitaw l-effett ta’ din il-kriżi fuq il-popolazzjoni,” qalu l-Ewroparlamentari.

Il-MPE qed jitolbu investiment b’saħħtu fl-infrastrutturi pubbliċi. Żiedu jgħidu li “l-politika fiskali tista’ tgħin lill-banek u s-swieq, iżda wkoll lill-vittmi li għaddejjin minn xokk fuq saħħithom u fuq l-aspett ekonomiku f’ħajjithom.”

“Qed nitolbu lilek u l-istituzzjoni tiegħek biex, fuq livell baġitarju, tappoġġja azzjoni immedjata u kkoordinata b’risposta għal din il-kriżi. Ir-risposta tinsab fir-reviżjoni tal-Patt ta’ Stabbiltà u Tkabbir,” ikkonkludew il-MPE.

Labour MEPs call on Council President to ramp up coordinated response to Coronavirus impact

‘Support a massive and coordinated response to this crisis on the budgetary level,’ Members of the European Parliament tell Council President Charles Michel

Head of the Maltese S&D delegation Miriam Dalli and MEP Josianne Cutajar, member of the EP’s industry committee, have co-signed a letter to the President of the European Council Charles Michel urging the European Union to urgently adopt a coordinated response in view of the societal and economic impact of the Coronavirus.

The letter, sent on the initiative of the Socialists and Democrats Group, was co-signed by MEPs from the EPP, Greens, GUE and Renew. The MEPs said that Europe could already note the economic and health consequences of the epidemic, highlighted by decades of under-investment in public infrastructure.

“This health crisis confronts us with our responsibility. In Europe, there is almost no more flexibility for monetary policy and, in any case, we cannot wait for the ECB to act alone. We have to intervene with our own tools to limit the effect of this crisis on the population,” the signatories to the letter said.

The MEPs called for investment to the public infrastructures: “Fiscal policy can help banks and markets, but also the victims of the health shock and/or the economic shock.”

“We ask you and your institution to support a massive and coordinated response to this crisis on the budgetary level. This answer goes through a revision of the Stability and Growth Pact,” the MEPs concluded.
