Miriam Dalli f’kampanja informattiva ma’ Friends of the Earth Malta favur bdiewa u raħħala

Il-Membru tal-Parlament Ewropew Miriam Dalli ingħaqdet mal-organizazzjoni ambjentali Friends of the Earth Malta (FoEM) f’appell biex konsumaturi jixtru prodotti agrikoli lokali.

F’messaġġ li fih ingħaqdu numru ta’ bdiewa u raħħala Maltin u Għawdxin, konsumaturi ntalbu jappoġġjaw is-settur agrikolu lokali u b’hekk jagħtu għajnuna diretta lill-ekonomija lokali u lil min jaqla’ l-għixien tiegħu minn dan is-settur.

Il-Malta Farm Map, żviluppat minn FoEM, għandu l-għan li jgħin bdiewa u raħħala Maltin jbiegħu l-prodotti tagħhom, wara li ħafna mill-bejgħ intlaqat minn COVID19. Permezz tal-mappa diġitalisabu pjattaforma li tqabbadhom direttament mal-konsumaturi.

Miriam Dalli qed issegwi dan is-suġġett mill-qrib għaliex bħala viċi-president tal-grupp tas-Soċjalisti u Demokratiċi hija responsabbli anke’ mill-biedja u s-sajd.

“Qed nosserva mill-qrib kif kunċetti u soluzzjonijiet f’pajjiżi oħra Ewropej jistgħu jkunu adattati lokalment. Irridu biedja sostenibbli, b’regoli li jgħinu lill-bdiewa bi produzzjoni żgħira meta mqabbel ma’ produtturi ferm akbar f’pajjiżi oħra Ewropej,” qalet Miriam Dalli.

L-MEP għaddejja b’laqgħat ma’ diversi produtturi lokali u fost l-isfidi eżistenti, hemm il-ħtieġa t’aktar għarfien tal-importanza strateġika li għandu dan is-settur biex f’pajjizna jkollna provvista tal-ikel bnina u lokali.

“Ma nistgħux inkunu totalment dipendenti fuq l-importazzjoni tal-ikel u għalhekk importanti li ma nidħlux f’riskju li neqirdu l-agrikoltura f’pajjiżna. Mingħajr ma naħsbu li hemm xi provvista li ma tafx limitu, huwa neċessarju li pajjiżna jipproduċi ikel bażiku bħal frott u ħaxix,” qalet Miriam Dalli.

Dalli spjegat kif il-prodott lokali huwa l-aktar wieħed bnin u sigur, għax ġej minn sorsi li nafuhom.Hemm bżonn ukoll ta’ aktar żgħażagħ fis-setturi agrikoli li jkollhom l-ideat innovattivi.Jeħtieġ li r-riżorsi kollha neċessarji jkunu disponibbli għalihom, bħall-aċċess għall-ilma, għall-art, għas-suq u għal miżuri li jistgħu jgħinuhom jibnu karriera.

Fuq kollox, jeħtieġ li l-konsumaturi jsiru jafu aktar dwar il-vera differenza li jkunu qed jagħmlu meta jixtru prodotti lokali. Miriam Dalli qalet li se tkompli taħdem biex jasal ċar il-messaġġ li m’hawnx aħjar mill-prodott lokali Malti, kemm għas-saħħa taċ-ċittadini kif ukoll għall-ekonomija tal-pajjiż.

The Importance of Buying Local

Miriam Dalli in an information campaign with Friends of the Earth Malta aimed at promoting local agricultural products

MEP Miriam Dalli has joined the environmental organization Friends of the Earth Malta (FoEM) in encouraging consumers to buy local agricultural products.

In a message endorsed by a number of Maltese and Gozitan farmers, consumers were asked to support the local agricultural sector and thus provide direct help to the local economy and to those who earn their living from this sector.

A ‘Malta Farm Map’, developed by FoEM, aims to help Maltese farmers sell their products, after much of their sales were affected COVID19. By means of this digital map, farmers have a platform that connects them directly to consumers.

Miriam Dalli is following this issue closely. As vice-president of the Socialist and Democrat group, she is also responsible for agriculture and fisheries.

“I am observing how concepts and solutions in other European countries can be adapted locally. We want sustainable farming, with regulations that help farmers with a relatively small production rate compared to much larger producers in other European countries, ”said Miriam Dalli.

The MEP is carrying out meetings with various local producers. Among the existing challenges, there is a need for more awareness of the strategic importance of this sector for a healthy and local food supply in our country.

“We cannot be totally dependent on food imports, therefore it is imperative that we avoid running the risk of depleting agricultural produce in our country. We must not think that there is a supply that knows no limit and realize that it is necessary for our country to produce basic foods such as fruits and vegetables, ”said Miriam Dalli.

She added that the global pandemic has shed light on how the supply of food from abroad cannot be taken for granted. Miriam Dalli explained how the local product is the healthiest and safest, because we are familiar with its sources of origin. There is also a need for young people in agricultural sectors to come up with innovative ideas. In order to do this, all the necessary resources need to be available to them, such as access to water, land, the market and measures that can help them build their career.

Above all, consumers need to know more about the real difference they can make when buying local products. Miriam Dalli concluded that she will continue to work to communicate that local is best, both for the health of the citizens and for the economy of the country.
