New Water network in Gozo reaches €6 million investment as more dispensers continue to be installed
With an investment of €6 million, Water Services Corporation (WSC) is carrying out works related to the New Water Network in Gozo. The New Water project is being expanded across Malta and Gozo to support farmers in their produce for a longer period of time.
The ongoing works include a 9km network through Għajnsielem and Kerċem. Thanks to this investment there will be an increase of 60 dispensers in Gozo.
This was announced by the Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Sustainable Development Miriam Dalli, Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri, together with the WSC Chief Executive Ivan Falzon, during a visit at the ongoing works in Santa Luċja, Kerċem Gozo.
Minister Miriam Dalli expalined that WSC is working to improve water quality, as various reservoirs are being roofed to control the network in rural areas. With more than 40km and 200 dispensers will be available across Malta and Gozo.
“The Government will continue providing New Water to more farmers for irrigation. New Water is an essential source for farmers as they benefit from a low salinity water resulting in a positive impact of their crops and a wider and varied production,” said Minister Dalli.
“The rural aspect in Gozo is still strong and this has been confirmed by the latest statistics issued at the beginning of February by the National Statistical Office. Climate change is a phenomenon that cannot be ignored and the Government, through the WSC, is expanding the second-class water network service to provide this essential resource to our farmers,” explained Minister Clint Camilleri.
Minister Camilleri recalled that this is not the only investment made in Gozo in this aspect as over the last few years, valleys have been cleaned to store more water, and recently a reservoir for the storage of rainwater for farmers was inaugurated.
“WSC will continue to invest in infrastructure to continue towards a more circular economy, improving the environment whilst continue offering support the agriculture industry. In the past two years, we doubled the amount of New Water produced, however our targets are more ambitious than this. Today’s investment confirms our commitment to improve the common good,” said Chief Executive Ivan Falzon.

€6 miljun investiment fin-network ta’ New Water f’Għawdex hekk kif aktar dispensers qed jiġu installati
B’investiment ta’ €6 miljun il-Korporazzjoni għas-Servizzi tal-Ilma għaddejja b’ħidma fin-network tan-New Water f’Għawdex. Dan it-tkabbir qed isir f’diversi lokalitajiet madwar Malta u Għawdex biex aktar bdiewa jibbenefikaw minn New Water li jintuża għal tkabbir ta’ frott u ħxejjex.
Preżentement n-network għaddej minn Għajnsielem sa Kerċem, filwaqt li għaddej xogħol biex ikompli jinfirex għal total ta’ 9km. Grazzi għal dawn l-investiment se jkun hemm 60 dispenser fil-gżira Għawdxija.
Dan ġie mħabbar mil-Ministru għall-Enerġija, l-Intrapriża u l-Iżvilupp Sostenibbli Miriam Dalli, il-Ministru għal Għawdex Clint Camilleri, flimkien mal-Kap Eżekuttiv tal-Korporazzjoni għas-Servizzi tal-ilma Ivan Falzon waqt żjara tax-xogħolijiet li qed isiru f’Santa Luċija, Kerċem Għawdex.
Il-Ministru Miriam Dalli spjegat kif il-Korporazzjoni għaddejja b’ħidma biex tkompli ttejjeb il-kwalità tal-ilma, fejn diversi ġibjuni qed jiġu msaqqfa biex b’hekk jiġi kontrollat in-network f’żoni rurali li se jkopri aktar minn 40km b’madwar 200 dispenser ta’ New Water f’Malta u Għawdex.
“Bħala Gvern qed inkomplu naħdmu biex inwasslu New Water lil aktar bdiewa u raħħala biex b’hekk ikunu jistgħu jużawh għat-tisqija. In-New Water qed ikun sors essenzjali fejn il-bdiewa qed jibbenefikaw minn provvista ta’ ilma b’salinita baxxa li tipprovdi ħxejjex ta’ kwalità u produzzjoni akbar u aktar varjata,” qalet il- Ministru Dalli.
“L-aspett rurali f’Għawdex għadu wieħed b’saħħtu u dan ġie ikkonfermat mill-aħħar statistika maħruġa fil-bidu ta’ Frar mill-Uffiċju Nazzjonali tal-Istatistika. It-tibdil fil-klima hu fenomenu li ma jistax jiġi injorat u kien għalhekk li l-Gvern, permezz tal-Korporazzjoni għas-Servizzi tal-Ilma, qed tespandi n-network tas-second class water biex tipprovdi dan ir-riżors essenzjali lill-bdiewa tagħna,” spjega Minister Clint Camilleri.
Il-Ministru Camilleri fakkar li dan m’hux l-uniku investiment li sar Għawdex f’dan ir-rigward hekk kif matul l- aħħar snin tnaddfu xi widien biex aktar ilma jiġi maħżun filwaqt ġie nawgurat ġibjun għall-ħażna tal-ilma tax- xita, liema ilma ser ikun jista’ jintuża mill-bdiewa.
“Il-WSC se tkompli tinvesti fl-infrastruttura tagħha biex tkompli tikkontribwixxi favur ekonomija ċirkolari, issaħħaħ l-ambjent ta’ madwarna u fl-istess ħin toffri sapport lil industrija tal-biedja. Matul l-aħħar sentejn irdopjajna l-ammont ta’ New Water li pproduċejna, imma l-miri tagħna huma ferm iżjed ambizzjużi. Dan l- investiment fin-networks li rajna illum jikkonferma l-impenn li għandna. Fondi Ewropej ma fondi nazzjonali li verament qed jagħmlu titjib għal ġid komuni,” qal il-Kap Ezekuttiv Ivan Falzon.
